One of the biggest highlights of the Sri Lankan calendar, 'Esala Perahera' (elephant parade) is a cultural immersion that is truly unique to Sri Lanka. Its a colorful event that takes place in the hill city of Kandy with fire dancers to elephants dressed in magnificent gowns

and all you need is to find a nice spot by the road side and a couple of blankets to keep you warm.

The festival is conducted in remembrance of Buddha as the center piece of this parade is an ancient artifact said to be the tooth of the Buddha that was taken from the ashes and smuggled into Sri Lanka in the 5th century. The event occurs over a ten day period ending with the full moon.
